Older Persons & Herbal medicines.

By Ivan

Unlike conventional pharmaceutical products, which are usually prepared from synthetic materials through the application of reproducible manufacturing techniques and procedure, herbal medicinal products are prepared from material of plant origin which may be subject to contamination and deterioration, and may vary in composition and properties. The control of the starting materials, storage and processing assumes particular importance because of the often complex and variable nature of many herbal medicinal products.

However; because  many older persons use herbal medicines one as a cure and two as a trade for them to  make some money; Uganda Reach Aged Association  in its work to improve the living conditions  of older  persons; targets traditional health practitioners(THPs). For a week-long; URAA  has been conducting dialogues  in Iganga district with (THPs) on various  issues  like their  relationship with conventional doctors  in the district, registration  of their associations in the  district, hygiene, and protection  of the environmentetc.

  1. Thanks Ivan, for sure i am begginning to feel the impact of this special project. I was amazed later when we met the Assistant CAO who was very passionate about supporting herbalists. He personally moved with us to the DHO and we continued this discussion but also agreed on an annual forum between herbalists and Biomedical practitioners
